Bekhorot 16 – בכורות ט״ז | Daf Yomi with Rashi, Tosafot, the Rambam and halacha
What Bekhorot 16 teaches
- A substitute for a redeemed, blemished sacrifice cannot be sacrificed or redeemed, so it must be left to die.
- Even when guaranteed livestock legally belongs to a Jew, a gentile's right of seizure exempts the offspring from firstborn sanctity.
- A lamb resembling a goat is exempt from bechor unless it exhibits at least some physical features of its mother.
The sugyot
- The Gemara determines the fate of substitutes and offspring of redeemed sacrificial animals, and explores the biblical and traditional sources consigning them to death.
- A gentile's lien on livestock exempts offspring from firstborn sanctity, while an offspring resembling another species requires maternal physical traits to become sanctified.
- The Gemara resolves an apparent contradiction regarding guaranteed investments (tzein barzel): while legally in the recipient's possession, a gentile's lien creates an exemption from firstborn sanctity.
- The Gemara disputes how many generations of guaranteed livestock are exempt from firstborn consecration, evaluating Rav Huna and Rav Yehuda against the mishna.
