Where we left off
The Gemara is testing whether humans can achieve exact measurement. It examines a corpse found precisely equidistant between two towns.
The question going in
Can human measurements ever achieve exact precision, and how are disputed twin firstborn lambs resolved?
Know before you start
- אי אפשר לצמצם (impossibility of exact precision): Natural events and human measurements cannot achieve absolute, simultaneous, or microscopic equality. A margin of error is always present.
- המוציא מחבירו עליו הראיה (burden of proof on claimant): A person demanding property held by another must provide definitive proof to extract it. Without proof, property remains in its current possessor's hands.
- מתנות כהונה (priestly gifts): An owner slaughtering a non-sacred animal must give the foreleg, jaw, and maw to a priest. A consecrated animal or its substitute is exempt.
- חליפין (replacement animal): When one twin goes to the priest, the second lamb is treated like an exchanged animal. This replacement status affects its obligation in priestly gifts.
Who's who
- Rabbi Tarfon (רבי טרפון, Tanna): He initially awards the fatter twin lamb to the priest, but later rules they divide doubtful animals.
- Rabbi Akiva (רבי עקיבא, Tanna): He awards the priest only the leaner lamb and places the burden of proof on the priest.
- Rabbi Meir (רבי מאיר, Tanna): He obligates the owner to give priestly gifts from the doubtfully sanctified second lamb.
- Rabbi Yosei (רבי יוסי, Tanna): He exempts the doubtfully sanctified second lamb because its replacement was already given to the priest.
