Reawakening of Nullified Substances: Extinction Versus Latency
When a forbidden substance is nullified, does it cease to exist halakhically, or does it merely sleep until awakened?
The Gemara discusses fish brine purchased from an עם הארץ (person untrusted regarding purity laws). Reish Lakish explains that if the brine is mostly fish exudate, it is pure. Brine itself cannot contract טומאה (ritual impurity). The minority of impure water inside it is nullified in the majority of brine.
Rabbi Yirmeya restricts this leniency. One may only dip bread in the brine. If one pours the brine into a cooking pot containing water, the minority of water finds the pot's water. It is revived from its nullification.
Abaye challenges this mechanism. He asks whether impurity that was once nullified can ever return and reawaken. Rav Dimi proves that it does from a mishna concerning impure תרומה (priestly gift).
The question
Does ביטול (halakhic nullification) permanently extinguish an identity, or does the original status remain latent and capable of reawakening?
Through the sources
The Gemara (Gemara)
Rabbi Yirmeya states that nullified impure water in brine reawakens upon joining other water in a cooking pot. Abaye questions whether nullified impurity can ever revive. Rav Dimi maintains that it indeed revives.
Rashi (Rishonim)
Rashi defines revival as awakening from sleep. The dormant substance leaves its nullified state and reverts to its original impurity. It was merely suppressed by what was not its kind.
Tosafot (Rishonim)
Tosafot clarifies that the brine itself cannot contract impurity. Rather, the water itself is restored to its initial status before the mixture. Nullification only suspended the water's legal activity.
Rabbeinu Gershom (Rishonim)
Rabbeinu Gershom explains that the water combines with the water in the pot. The word ניעור means it has departed from the rule of nullification. Once the like species outnumbers the brine, the protection ends.
Tosafot (Rishonim)
The Ri rules that nullified prohibitions generally return and reawaken. Even when additions occur with an interruption, nullified items reawaken everywhere. Bitul is never absolute extinction.
Ramban (Rishonim)
Ramban notes that when additional forbidden matter falls in, the prohibition revives. Once the combined measure can impart flavor, the prohibition returns and reawakens. He cites our sugya of brine as proof.
Ways to understand it
Temporary Latency
Nullification does not destroy the physical or spiritual presence of the minority substance. It merely overrides its legal effect while outnumbered. Whenever the substance encounters its own kind, the dormant status reawakens immediately.
Irrevocable Extinction
This view is reflected in Abaye's original question. Once an entity loses its legal status through majority nullification, that status is extinguished permanently from the mixture. It cannot regenerate simply because similar matter was subsequently added.
Where it lands
The sugya concludes against Abaye, establishing that nullified impurity can reawaken. The Rishonim extend this principle beyond ritual purity to standard dietary prohibitions. The Ri and Ramban affirm that nullified substances reawaken upon subsequent addition.
Halakhic nullification does not destroy a forbidden entity; it merely places it in dormant latency until its kind awakens it.
