Where we left off
The previous daf asked why Rav gave two overlapping halakhic rulings regarding the mishnayot in this chapter.
The question going in
Can a nursing animal suckle another mother's young, and may one clear neck hair to slaughter an animal?
Know before you start
- אותו ואת בנו (slaughtering a mother and its young on one day): The Torah forbids slaughtering an animal and its direct offspring on the same day. Lashes are incurred only if the maternal relationship is certain.
- לא תגוז בכור צאנך (prohibition of shearing a firstborn): The Torah forbids shearing the wool of a firstborn animal. Plucking hair unintentionally while preparing to slaughter or inspect a blemish raises questions under this ban.
- דבר שאינו מתכוין (unintentional act): This refers to performing a permitted action when a forbidden labor might inadvertently occur without intent. The Gemara considers whether this principle permits loosening hair before slaughter on Yom Tov.
Who's who
- Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel (רבן שמעון בן גמליאל, Tanna): He holds a nursing animal is presumed to have given birth, establishing its status regarding firstborn laws.
- Rabbi Yosei ben HaMeshullam (רבי יוסי בן המשולם, Tanna): He permits clearing hair with a cleaver before slaughtering a firstborn if the hair stays in place.
- Aḥai beribbi (אחאי בריבי, Amora): He asks whether a ewe suckling an animal that resembles a pig proves it is her biological offspring.
- Rav Huna (רב הונא, Amora): He rules that clearing hair before slaughter is permitted on Yom Tov based on Rav's ruling.
