Before you learn Bekhorot 27
Where we left off
Bekhorot 26b prohibited paying a priest for his labor with sacred gifts like terumah. The sugya continues mid-sentence to clarify the owner's financial rights in directing those gifts.
The question going in
Can an owner sell the right to designate priestly gifts, and what leniencies apply outside the Land?
Know before you start
- טוֹבַת הֲנָאָה (Benefit of discretion): The owner has the right to choose which priest receives his gifts. An Israelite may accept payment from another Israelite to assign gifts to a specific priest.
- תְּרוּמַת חוּצָה לָאָרֶץ (Diaspora terumah): Separating agricultural gifts outside Eretz Yisrael is rabbinic and treated with leniency. It is nullified in a simple majority and eaten despite certain states of ritual impurity.
- שְׁנָתוֹ שֶׁלּוֹ (The animal's personal year): A firstborn animal must be eaten within its first year. The Gemara explores whether this counts from its birth or resets at the calendar new year.
Who's who
- Shmuel (שְׁמוּאֵל, Amora): He establishes fundamental leniencies permitting the nullification and consumption of diaspora terumah.
- Rav (רַב, Amora): He rules on immersion for corpse impurity and derives the timeline for eating a firstborn.
- Rav Sheshet (רַב שֵׁשֶׁת, Amora): His ruling permitting one impure from a creeping animal to immerse and eat terumah is examined.
