Where we left off
The previous daf asked how the Mishnah permits selling a blemished animal tithe offering. Rav Sheshet answered that this allowance applies to young orphans to prevent loss.
The question going in
From where does the Torah derive that an animal tithe offering cannot be sold? How may its value be bundled into other animal parts without violating this prohibition?
Know before you start
- מעשר בהמה (animal tithe offering): Every tenth kosher animal is sanctified to God. Scripture states that this animal may not be redeemed.
- הבלעה (sale by inclusion): Prohibited meat is not sold directly. Instead, its price is absorbed into secondary items like hide or bones.
- חרמים (priestly dedications): Dedicated property is totally consecrated to God and may not be sold or redeemed. Once given to a priest, it becomes non-sacred.
- העמדה והערכה (standing and valuation): Redeeming a consecrated animal requires presenting it alive before a priest for appraisal.
Who's who
- Rava (רבא, Amora): He derives the prohibition against selling animal tithe from dedicated property.
- Rav Ashi (רב אשי, Amora): He argues that 'it shall not be redeemed' directly means that tithe cannot be sold.
- Rabbi Akiva (רבי עקיבא, Tanna): He explains that Beit Hillel permit even a gentile to eat a blemished firstborn.
