The previous daf analyzed leg blemishes, distinguishing between limb defects and fatal injuries. No sugya continues onto this daf.
The question going in
Which physical defects permit slaughtering a firstborn outside the Temple? How does gender ambiguity disqualify or sanctify an animal?
Know before you start
- אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס (hermaphrodite): This animal possesses both male and female reproductive organs. The Sages debate whether it is treated as a male, female, or distinct creature.
- טוּמְטוּם (animal with concealed genitalia): A טוּמְטוּם is an animal whose reproductive organs are covered by skin. Its gender remains an unresolved doubt between male and female.
- גָּרָב וַחֲזָזִית (skin eruptions): These are types of boils mentioned in the Torah as altar blemishes. Whether they permit local slaughter depends on whether they are dry and permanent.
Who's who
- Abaye (אַבַּיֵי, Amora): He argues that a bodily crack constitutes a blemish only on bone, not on flesh.
- Rava (רָבָא, Amora): He investigates whether Rabbi Yishmael views an אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס (hermaphrodite) as a definite firstborn or a doubt.
- Rav Chisda (רַב חִסְדָּא, Amora): He rules that all agree a טוּמְטוּם (concealed genitalia) is sanctified out of סָפֵק (doubt).
- Rabbi Yishmael (רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל, Tanna): He maintains that an אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס (hermaphrodite) has a major blemish and may be slaughtered.
