Where we left off
The Gemara discussed whether clearing neck hair before slaughter is permitted on a Festival. Rav Huna cited Rav that the halakha follows Rabbi Yosei ben HaMeshullam.
The question going in
Does plucking hair count as shearing, and may one ever benefit from wool shed from a firstborn animal?
Know before you start
- דבר שאינו מתכוין (unintentional act): A permitted act that unintentionally causes a forbidden result. Rabbi Yehuda forbids it, while Rabbi Shimon permits it.
- פסיק רישיה (inevitable consequence): An unintentional act whose forbidden result is completely unavoidable. Even Rabbi Shimon agrees it is forbidden.
- גיזת קדשים (shearing consecrated animals): The Torah forbids shearing a firstborn animal. The Sages extended this rule even to animals consecrated for Temple maintenance.
Who's who
- Rav (רב, Amora): He rules that plucking hair is fundamentally distinct from the forbidden labor of shearing.
- Rabbi Yosei ben HaMeshullam (רבי יוסי בן המשולם, Tanna): He permits clearing hair before slaughter or to inspect a blemish if it remains in place.
- Akavya ben Mahalalel (עקביא בן מהללאל, Tanna): He permits deriving benefit from wool that fell off a blemished firstborn animal.
- Reish Lakish (ריש לקיש, Amora): He restricts the Mishnah's leniency to plucking by hand rather than with a tool.
