Bekhorot 48 – בכורות מ״ח | Daf Yomi with Rashi, Tosafot, the Rambam and halacha
What Bekhorot 48 teaches
- For doubtful twin boys, the father pays five sela, but if one dies within thirty days, he pays nothing.
- Divided brothers are treated partly as purchasers, preventing a priest from collecting an oral debt from their small inheritance.
- If two fathers paid one priest before an intermingled infant died, the priest must refund five sela.
The sugyot
- The Mishnah determines redemption liabilities for doubtful firstborn twins, addressing cases where one twin dies, the father dies, or a girl is born.
- The Gemara clarifies why divided brothers might be exempt from redemption money, resolving the dispute through inheritance, purchase, and partial obligations.
- The Gemara tests Rabbi Yehuda's ruling through a case of two identical names, concluding property is merely a guarantor and cannot be claimed alone.
- The Mishnah determines פדיון הבן (redemption of the firstborn) obligations when newborn infants of two mothers become intermingled under various permutations of paternity and gender.
- The Gemara questions why a single priest must return redemption money if he could deflect each father individually just like two priests.
