The Rabbinic Augmentation of the Biblical Sela
Can the Sages permanently increase a financial obligation mandated by the Torah, and does doing so redefine the biblical commandment itself?
The Torah establishes statutory monetary payments across many commandments, such as the five selaim given to a כהן (priest) for פדיון הבן (redemption of the firstborn son). In our sugya, Rava calculates that the original biblical סלע (sela) weighed twenty מעות (ma'ot), which equals three and one-third דינרים (dinars).
However, a baraita regarding the redemption of an ancestral field states that the sanctuary sela contains forty-eight פונדיונים (pundeyonim), which equal twenty-four ma'ot or four full dinars. This presents an apparent contradiction between the biblical text and sanctuary practice.
The Gemara resolves that the baraita reflects the era after the Sages augmented the coin by one-sixth. Scripture itself sanctioned this expansion with the phrase 'twenty gera shall be the shekel,' while forbidding any decrease.
The question
Does the rabbinic augmentation permanently redefine the biblical sela across all Torah obligations, or was it merely a local currency adjustment?
Through the sources
The Gemara (Gemara)
בָּתַר דְּאוֹסִיפוּ עִילָּוַיְיהוּ, דְּתַנְיָא: ״עֶשְׂרִים גֵּרָה הַשֶּׁקֶל״ — לָמַדְנוּ לַשֶּׁקֶל שֶׁהוּא עֶשְׂרִים גֵּרָה, וּמִנַּיִן שֶׁאִם רָצָה לְהוֹסִיף יוֹסִיף?The Gemara explains that the Sages enlarged the sela, utilizing a biblical exposition from the word יהיה (shall be) to authorize increasing the weight beyond twenty gera.
The Gemara (Gemara)
Rav Ashi sent seventeen dinars for pidyon haben, thinking the baseline was the original Torah weight. Rav Acha countered that he owed twenty dinars because the enacted increase applies to redemptions.
Rashi (Rishonim)
Rashi notes that the Sages added a sixth to the biblical baseline, bringing it to the standard of the full Tyrian sela of twenty-four ma'ot.
Tosafot (Rishonim)
Tosafot contrast coins with dry food measures, which cannot be expanded. Only monetary weights are fluid because Scripture specifically revealed that the sela may be enlarged via the term יהיה.
Tosafot (Rishonim)
Tosafot explain that this increase altered the biblical requirement only because the rabbinic court augmented the coin universally everywhere, unlike a regional currency modification.
Commentary on Sefer Hamitzvot of Rasag (Acharonim)
The author demonstrates that this increase did not violate the prohibition against adding to mitzvot. Because the community redefined the standard, nothing else is called a shekel across any Torah commandment.
Meshekh Chokhmah (Acharonim)
The Meshekh Chokhmah rules that valuations follow the exact weight current at the time of the vow. Thus, the statutory obligation binds to the contemporary sela established at that specific moment.
Ways to understand it
Universal Redefinition of Torah Standards
The biblical word יהיה empowered the High Court to alter the essential monetary definitions of the Torah. When enacted universally, the newly augmented weight becomes the actual biblical definition of a shekel for every mitzvah.
Dynamic Market Currency Baseline
The term shekel refers to an agreed-upon circulating unit of weight. The Torah set a minimal floor of twenty gera, but entrusted the community to align statutory payments with the prevailing commercial standard.
Where it lands
The dialogue between Rav Ashi and Rav Acha concludes that Torah redemptions demand the augmented standard of twenty dinars for five selaim. Because the Sages instituted the increase universally, it fully replaced the original weight and became the obligatory statutory sanctuary standard for all subsequent generations.
The Torah established twenty gera as a floor, empowering the Sages to universally augment the sela into a larger binding standard.
